Always think one step ahead
When planning do not ever expect things to turn out right. Always have multiple escape routes and backup plans for each step you take. If you're not always prepared one miscue could leave you a stranded midnight snack.
Destroy the brain
Millions of ways to do so, but one single goal. Take out the brain and you take out the beast.
Weapons, take what you need not what you can
Sure you could take that bazooka... but what would be the point? Overstocking weapons only leads to fatigue from having to drag them everywhere. When you are on foot there is no need to take more than you can carry for long distances. A hand gun, rifle, and some sort of melee weapon should be enough for you to make it. If you're stockpiling your home on the other hand... take every single piece you can get your hands on.
Don't panic
Sure there may be 50 zombies at your front door but what will panicking help? It will only get you killed faster. Instead take a second(if you have one) and make a plan to survive. Panicking will only leave you open to making stupid decisions and most likely wanting to dine on human flesh yourself.
Find a safe house and secure it
Find yourself a nice place out in the middle of nowhere, and secure it like a castle. Board it up, fence it off, dig ditches, use barbed wire... anything to keep any stragglers from finding their way into your premises.
Gather supplies
Food, water, first aid, weapons, things to reinforce your shelter... anything that you may need for survival. Equip your safe house with everything you will need to stick it out for as long as possible.
Steer clear of high population areas
Sure the movies tell you to go to the mall, Walmart, grocery stores... they have everything you would need. Except for safety. Everyone still around is running to these large stores and areas to get supplies of their own. If you must loot, loot the small mom and pop shops(pending mom and pop are zombies) and get what you can. The large stores and cities are just going to become zombie graveyards. Try your luck out in the middle of nowhere. If there aren't live people around chances are zombies aren't there either.
The buddy system
If you go out, go out with a group. If you are ambushed by zombies a group has a better chance of surviving the attack then one person. If nothing else you can push one of them into the mob and run off while they shed him... just make sure you build them a monument when you get back to your safe house. You don't want him dieing to be for nothing now do you?
Check Survivors
If you find someone, check them fully to make sure they are not infected. Sure everyone wont like this idea, but it is important to check everyone for cases of infection. Lead the way by stripping and showing them you aren't infected. But by no means can you afford to bring any infected person into your safe house. Once they are bit, that is it.
Fire? Why?
Never light a zombie on fire unless it is a controlled flame. Sure it's fun to watch them burn when they are trapped but if you light a free roamer up near your safe house it can burn your vegetation, torch your home, and leave all your days of building the safe house a complete waste.
Nukes are a no no
Never think about using nuclear weaponry to destroy a zombie uprising. What if they don't die immediately? Then you have radiated zombies roaming around giving the living tumors and other problems just by existing.
Pretending to be a zombie only leaves you as an easy meal
You might have heard that walking like a zombie will keep you safe because zombies are stupid. But they want your warm flesh and live body... go ahead and walk into the pile pretending to be a zombie and watch yourself become a very easy meal.
Distance is key
If you can stay 100 yards away and fight, then by all means do so. Going in Rambo style will only make you an easier target for infection.
No place is safe
No matter where you are, never feel the comfort of safety. This only leads you to let your guard down and not be prepared when something happens. Stay on your guard and always be prepared for the "what if" situations.
Always be aware
Zombies can be lying around or hanging out anywhere... They can come thought windows, wallsand many mysterious places
Dont get bit
One bite and it is all over so be sure to have clothing that is harder to bite thought but keeps your agility up.
Bite the Bullet
You are not immune. That bite wont just go away. It did happen. Don't be a dick; kill yourself so you don't kill your mates.
Ammo is sparse
Dont go rambo pumping clips upon clips into the zombies body...aim for the head.
Weapons with Unlimited Ammo
Always remember hand to hand weapons can be used again and again and again without the need to reload. Keep that in mind when you are arming yourself againist the horde.
Renewable Resources
Find a way to collect water and grow crops. If at all possible settle on a piece of land that can be cultivated and made into a vegetable paradise. The more food you grow the less you need to go out and find.
Armor isn't always metal
Leather jackets and sweatshirts can be quite useful in keeping the teeth of the dead from breaking your skin.
You against the world.
If it happens...see bite the bullet.
Optimism is your best friend!
Being bleak about any situation can ruin it, being hopeful and optimistic can help moral, and courage of your people, they will think they have a chance, and hope will empower your people to survive, and dare I say...flourish?
You're not Chuck Norris, Don't be a hero!!!
Your job is to survive, don't go out acting like your the savior! Yes you can try to help people, but if you know there doomed... don't go and try to make something out of a helpless situation. Maybe snipe them now so that they don't get slowly eaten. But don't put yourself in danger. There may be others out there you can still actually help.
Don't try to be Jesus
You can save some people but if its hopeless don't try it
Think, then act

Knock
Don't just open up a door, zombies won't be surprised, they engage at the moment they detect prey. Knocking will make them active so you know if there is movement inside. Talking is not recommended since your voice might go further then you actually want to.
Get your money early
With your group, all take out a loan before class 3 outbreak you can buy all the supplies you need & buy the land need for your Fort, so if it does not make it to a full blown outbreak you will still be in accordance with the law.
Time be to a soldier
Don't think about joining up to army when a class 1 outbreak happens as you could up end in a real war with other humans plus you could end up in a country you don't squat about but instead join the reserves ( home guard) army as it part time you can live your life as normal but end up with all the trimmings of full time soldier plus you get go A.W.L as not on base when class 2/3 happens.
The Information Superhighway
The internet... don't abandon it when a class 2 outbreak happens, Reconnaissance, build a maps of place were you can find weapons in your country, were heaviest populated areas, gather info on thing what you need to survive & so on
Zombies will not react to incendiary warfare
The only thing worse than a zombie is a flaming zombie - Sorry guys, this means no flamethrowers!"
Keep in shape
Once you have secured a safehouse, and have supplies, you need to keep in shape, the last thing you need is to weaken over time by being idle in your safehouse as no safehouse is 100%
Don't be an idiot
Just because you survived this far doesn't mean you should be careless. Never stop thinking about what to do next.
Silence is golden
No matter how safe you believe yourself to be, don't make needless noise! You will only be alerting the undead to your presence.
"Time to Drop the Hammer and Dispense some Indiscriminatory Justice!"
Or perhaps you would like to use that hammer as an emergency weapon. Either way, during a smaller or contained outbreak sometimes it's best to grit your teeth and be a charitable type. Meaning extermination of the zombie nation. If operations aren't already underway, try starting one! Eliminate them before they eliminate you.
Duct Tape is Silver
If your clothing just isn't tough enough, try coating a coat in the shiny stuff known as miracle-sticky-tape-stuff, AKA Duct Tape. It may take time, but with enough layers no undead will be breaking skin through your shiny, tacky armor.
Roll 20's
Never leave it up to chance that anything you or anyone else owns will hold out over any long period of abuse. Carry a backup for everything, or at least plan ahead for when your equipment has a critical-fail.
Duct Tape, Take Two
Keep in mind that one roll will go a long ways, so always carry one, since it can save your life when that car door won't stay closed after ramming those zombies in the last town. Torn jacket? Tape it. Open wound? It won't be fun, but if you don't have medical supplies, tape it. At times, this simple stuff can be the ultimate quick-fix. But remember: A duct-tape fix is always temporary.
